One of our Dalit activists Dr. PT Gaikwad is honored with a ‘National integrity and social brotherhood’ award of Pune Corporation on 21st June 2006. The award winner Dr. PT Gaikwad (M.S.) is president of Prabudha Medical Forum (PMF). The PMF is an organization of Dalit doctors in Pune with about 200 member doctors. The members are committed social workers and paying back to our society in true sense. They organize medical camps throughout Maharashtra including remotest adivasi areas where medical help is just not available. All the medical check ups, diagnosis, advises are provided free of cost including medicines, injections, eye glasses etc. Along with the free medicine these doctors also give dose of social awareness and our rights to people especially to young generation.

Dr. PT Gaikwad is founder and president of the PMF. He is post graduate in surgery from renowned B.J. Medical College Pune. He was a very active Dalit student leader and later professor in B.J. Medical College. Presently he owns two medical hospitals in Pune. His hospitals provide the best medical experts help to our communities almost free of cost. Apart from the PMF office, Dr. Gaikwad’s consultation room is the place for social discussions and planning. Dr. Gaikwad and the PMF have kept a distance from the political parties so far. The PMF have an ambitious plan to build a hospital with a paramedical education centre for Dalits.

I was closely associated with PMF and Dr. Gaikwad during my stay in Pune. I have all praise for their efforts in providing medical help to poor Dalits and also for creating social awareness in our youths.
